Understanding the Calculation
What is Chargeable Weight?
Chargeable weight is the weight used to calculate your freight cost. It is the higher of actual gross weight and volumetric (dimensional) weight. This prevents large but light shipments from occupying cargo space at only actual weight cost.
Air Freight Formula
Volumetric weight for air freight = (L × W × H in cm × number of pieces) ÷ 6,000. This gives the equivalent weight in kg. Most air carriers use this divisor. Some carriers use 5,000 — check with your airline.
Ocean LCL Formula
For ocean LCL, the ratio is 1 CBM = 1,000 kg for pricing purposes. The chargeable measurement is the higher of actual weight (in kg) or CBM × 1,000. For dense cargo (tyres, metal parts), actual weight typically governs.
